Luca Tornatore è ancora in carcere

To the Danish Embassy in Rome
To the Italian Embassy in Copenhagen
To the Danish Minster for Foreign Affairs

We are surprised by the allegation that has been raised against our colleague Dr Luca Tornatore of being involved in riots in Copenhagen on the night of December the 14th. We know Luca as a talented scientist, expert in computer science and in cosmology. He is author of more than 20 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, and joins his research with activism in the fields of climate change and sustainability. We express our hope that his position will be clarified as soon as possible, so as to allow him to get back to science.

Dear friends and colleagues of Luca Tornatore,

we are writing to you because you subscribed the petition for signatures in his favour. May this email result unpleasant to you, let us know and we will remove your contact from the list. Also, you might be receiving some duplicates of this email, and we apologize for this: the handling of so many addresses is not easy, and we also would like to translate every message into English since many foreign colleagues of Luca signed the petition.

The bad update is that Luca is staying in jail, likely until the half of January, waiting for the trial.
The "good" news is that the solidarity to him keeps on growing.
The online petition has currently reached 1580 signatures, the embassies have been reached by at least 200 emails (it is also possible that many people contacted the embassies without letting us know they did).
Beside the University of Trieste, the University Center of Study and Research for Peace (CUSPR), the Department for Urban and Architectural Design, the Astronomical Observatory, the SISSA, the ISDE Association (doctors for the environment) and the Province of Trieste, in the last days also the Municipality of Venice has unanimously approved a declaration for Luca:
http://consiglio.comune.venezia.it/?pag=srchatti_4_2398&m=16_capo

There is also a point of order in the Italian Parliament, and an appeal to the Foreign Minister Frattini, presented by the Italian Deputies Delia Muner and Alessandro Maran.
A very interesting article (in italian) has appeared in the on-line newspaper Micromega:

http://temi.repubblica.it/micromega-online/liberta-per-luca-tornatore/

Amnesty International was informed, but it did not take official position yet; however they informed us that the Danish Police is not new to criticisms:

http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/info/EUR18/001/2008/en

Now, WE ASK YOU AND ADDITIONAL EFFORT:

Despite the holidays, it is important to keep the pressure on embassies high.
We ask Luca's colleagues (and in general, everybody is in the world of research, broadly
speaking) to send an email to embassies (if they did not do it yet), following the schema at the end of this email. We would like to make this not a random and irritating mail-bombing to embassies, but a collective petition from the Science Community.

Many of you already wrote to freelucatornatore@gmail.com ; however, this is not the right address to sign the petition (however, this address helps us in keeping track of the many new contacts, so put us in cc), so we pray everybody who did not do that, to use the ONLINE PETITION FORM:

http://www.petizionionline.it/petizione/per-la-liberazione-di-luca-tornatore/437

(you will be asked of a temporary username and password, and of your email, in order to verify the signature)

If you want, to can also write directly to Luca:

A few more details:
the charge made on Luca is of having thrown bottles (not molotov bottles) on policemen.
The release request could not be presented by Luca's trusted counsel, because it was out of the deadline, and Luca's court-appointed counsel did not presented it.
The date for the trial has not been presented yet; however, it must be set by January 12, unless this term will be push forward of an other month.
The latest rumors speaks about a possible date at the beginning of January.
His family, friends and colleagues are trying to follow him as closest as possible, and also Dansih friends have offered themselves to provide Luca of clothes and money if needed.

In the meanwhile, Luca had his birthday in jail on December 21th, and he will have Christmas there as well...

Good holidays to everybody, and particularly to whoever will not be able to spend them with their beloved, and thanks for all your support.
